Fancy Mike – Madison Square Gardener

Here’s a release to be grabbing people…. Madison Square Gardener is the first release on a new label called King Deluxe, and it’s by a chap with the slightly effeminate name, Fancy Mike. Sub-Heavy Glitch Hop and synth-led post dubstep is the order of the day here… there’s 8 tracks, the pick of the bunch for me is Lazer Opera – a crunching glitch riddim being straddled by an almost Depeche Mode-esque synth line with enough sub-bass to shake the filters out your cigarettes. Other tracks bring bring in choppy and atmospheric soul samples, and reflective electronic atmospherics – there’s a lot of different influences here, but the central groove remains intact. Strong stuff.

There hasn’t been much noise from the mountain lately as i’ve been busy gearing up for the radio shows next week among other things, but one mix i’ve got to hit you up with is this new mixtape from the legendary Aquasky. Aquasky have been one of my favourite outfits for time, as well as the subject of a long-standing arguement as to how their name is pronounced (aqua, SKY, it’s not that hard is it?) and for the last couple of years they’ve been doing their thing under their house alias Black Noize. Well, the boys are now officially back in effect, and this mix shows why we love them so much, breaks electro, bass, all the good shit.

Octa Push drifted onto my radar withbtheir awesome 1975 tune which came out on Steakhouse records, one of my favourite labels about now. They’ve posted up a mix that was originally broadcast on Portugese radio station Antena3. there’s some wicked stuff in here, ususal suspects like Roska and Shortstuff alongside post-dubstep like Dorian Concept’s Her Tears Taste Like Pears.

I’ve been waiting to get my greasy mits on this for a while now – i was hoping it was going to see a vinyl release, but with the massive recent price drop in Traktor Scratch i just might be able to cope with an MP3!!! Breakage’s together tune with the legendary David Rodigan was probably the biggest dubstep tune of 2009, loved by the deep crews, the wobble crews and tech crews alike… when Hard dropped with the addition of a grime vocal from the Neham Generals it added another dimension to a tune that was already an anthem… I first heard Redlight’s barn storming remix on his Fact mix, which soundtracked a good few months after it’s release for me! This tune was the second track in and it’s grinding bassline is the best i’ve heard all year; and i know my basslines. Anyway, the man they used to call Clipz has finally decided to share, and Fact Mag are offering it as a free download… Hit the player for the good shit….

This track is an absolute MONSTER!!! If this is what we can expect from Chase & Status’ new album, then all bets are off – The heaviest album of 2011 could be boxed off by January! This enourmous track is collaboration with grime’s arch-nutter Tempa T and it’s a 140BPM bass leviathan, switching between heavy halfstep dub sounds and junglist breaks whilst Tempz shouts over the top as only he can do… Best thing is, they’re giving this track away for free when you sign up to their mailing list at chaseandstatus.co.uk! I’m absolutely loving Om Unit’s stuff right now, so this free download is an absolute treat! the unit came out of nowhere earlier this year, with a 90BPM white label remix of Joker’s creepy DigiDesign track… since then they’ve been remixing the likes of Adam Freeland and dropped a gorgeous EP on Plastician’s Terrorhythm recordings. they’ve offered up this nifty remix of Computer Jay which is closer to actual dub than dubstep and deep as you like… check it below
